I started a new job 6 weeks ago, and I’m playing that ‘when do I tell them I’m vegan’ game. Even after being vegan for 4 years, I still have such a hard time giving opinions when meeting new people. Unfortunately, I do live in the Midwest and I can still find myself in a room full of people who are not aware of what is going on in the world or who have been raised not to care.
With that said, everyone that I have mentioned my veganism to recently has been surprisingly open to the idea. I don’t think I’ve gotten one ‘But Bacon’ jokes yet! (It’s sad that I’m excited about this..) Things are changing thanks to the internet, even people in Nebraska at least know what veganism is!
I really like the new job I have! The place I work serves lunch. Well, that lunch can be AWESOME some days. I love taco days, or roasted veggie days. Other days not super awesome, so I get a big ol spinach salad and eat the cliff bar and fruit that I always carry in my bag. I still love this because I have been getting way more greens than I usually would get.
I know that I should talk to the staff who prepares the meals and ask for more vegan options. I haven’t been able to bring myself to do that yet, I’ve always hated asking for special treatment. At this point, only about 1 in 5 people I work with knows I’m vegan. I’ll probably speak up eventually, because it is better to ask for vegan options even if you don’t get them the idea of veganism starts tumbling around in heads.
For now, I keep telling people that I’m vegan one by one, when it comes up. I’ll probably bring in some baked goods soon and just announce that they are vegan.
